Accomplished design leader and designer with deep experience across a broad range of industries and technologies. I have a strong track record of leading and managing design teams and partnering with cross-functional leadership to plan, design, build and ship high-quality digital products and services. I’m focused on maintaining a healthy, well managed design organization and in making sure the work is aligned with and in service of customer and business impact. 

With more than two decades of experience, I bring strong capabilities to running the business of design teams, including recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, budget management, impact measurement, process and team health.  As a positive and personable leader, I’m focused on designer growth and engagement and on developing a rich design culture that’s shared across the broader organization. I combine business acumen with a customer-centric point of view to understand and target customer and business outcomes.

EXPERIENCE

Sr Design Manager, Capital One - Small Business, San Francisco, California, 2015 - Ongoing

Lead and manage a high-performing Design organization focused on business and customer outcomes. I’ve been instrumental in growing the organization from a small team of designers to a thriving, customer-focused Design practice with impact that values cross-functional partnership to deliver products and services for the Small Businesses market. 

  • Partner with the Head of Design and design leaders to grow the team, formalize the practice and operations and improve the quality of the work while ensuring that the team is healthy and the practice is well managed
  • Build relationships with cross-functional leadership to increase their understanding of the role of Design and design processes and tools, and to make sure Design understands the needs of the business and Product and Development mindsets and processes
  • Represent Design on a cross-functional team focused on improving the long-term effectiveness of product planning and development by increasing the clarity of business and customer goals, identifying and prioritizing the work required to meet those goals and ensure cross-functional alignment to deliver on those goals
  • Lead recruiting, forecasting and planning, budget management and project portfolio and impact reporting - I created a system to track all work and make sure project outcomes are declared and tracked
  • Partner with design leadership to continually adapt and improve our design process to meet the needs of Design and the business - over time the broader Small Business organization adopted design thinking and tools for their own purposes based on our advocacy and partnership
  • Collaborate across the Capital One Design Management community of practice to continually improve Design effectiveness, efficiency and impact - I’ve led specific initiatives, including measuring and maintaining a healthy design practice, budget planning and management and ensuring a healthy balance of creative time and meeting time, increasing meeting productivity and optimizing remote collaboration

Design Director, Vertigo, Pt Richmond, California, 2006 - 2014

Served as contributing designer, team lead, project lead and people manager. I participated in and led a large number of projects for a broad range of top-tier clients, with a growing emphasis on digital media experiences. I partnered with the Head of Design to help run the Design practice. 

  • Co-led a comprehensive program for NBC Universal to design and develop a robust, scalable multi-platform application framework and templates that enabled them to quickly build and release digital media experiences for over 20 brands, including NBC, USA, Bravo, Telemundo - I managed the application on-boarding partnerships between NBC Universal and the respective brands
  • Participated in defining and leading media app experience projects for NBC Sports, Disney Channel, Tivo, Microsoft and others - I partnered closely with clients to organize requirements and design robust, flexible, scalable platforms that delivered customized experiences across brands and technology platforms
  • Partnered with Microsoft to create a program of Windows 8 app experiences across a range of types from media to finance to healthcare to increase exposure and adoption when it was first released
  • Orchestrated design for a Sony application that configured and managed self-contained media packages to deliver customized Sony media content across a complex matrix of global delivery channels
  • Created rich, interactive enterprise experiences for Nike, Microsoft, JDR Logistics and others
  • Managed design staff and mentored designers to grow and thrive in their design work
